FULL DESIGN STORY
Premium Aesthetic Packed With Cannabis Vibes
To gather inspiration, and to ensure we developed something completely authentic, we dissected nearly every marijuana themed shoe that had been created before. What was apparent in our research was that previous offerings generally possessed these three elements:
- Lack of a premium aesthetic
- Obvious “stoner” elements
- Minimal storytelling
Our design objective, therefore, was narrowed to create a visually clean and premium hemp-based sneaker that any sneaker wearer would enjoy, while also packing it with powerful but subtle Black Sunday cannabis vibes.
90's Futuristic 'High' Sole
To begin, we benefited greatly from our premium retro-yet-futuristic chunky rubber sole we recently developed. Its clean and bulky appearance precisely aligned with the feel of the 90’s, perfect for an album that released in 1993, and also ideal for today since the 90’s are heavily influencing current fashion trends.
If you ask, "Why are the soles so damn 'high'?" Well, you technically answered your question by asking it.
Upper Design = Legalize It and Hits from the Bong
The hemp-based upper design is unlike anything seen before it, with each element loaded with inspiration from the band and what they rapped about throughout the Black Sunday album - legalizing marijuana and smoking it from a bong.
California Hills, Marijuana Teeth, and Legalization Symbolism
To start, the rolling hillside paneling represents the hills of Southern California, where the band is from. Within those hills are small rubberized marijuana leaf edges that are “out in the open”. Together, the visible leaves within the hills symbolize the recent recreational legalization in California, something the band advocated for relentlessly.
Shaped by Bongs
In addition to the hills, we wanted to incorporate the shape of a bong on the upper, but needed it to be extremely obscure to avoid the inevitable gimmicky appearance if it was easily noticeable. In this case, our unoriginal-looking heel counter and pull tab combine to create the base and neck of the bong. To complete it, we added an asymmetrical downstem going down into the base. While it most likely is not the first sneaker design to have such shapes, it is the first to purposely combine them to create the shape of a bong.
Stash Pocket
The shoe obviously doesn't physically act as a bong, but it does physically have a concealed stash pocket behind the tongue. As Rob Schneider would suggest, “You put your weeeeeed in there.” Or cash and special recipes.
Light It Up
Even the topmost eyelet subtly resembles the top of a Bic lighter, with an engraved 25 denoting the 25th anniversary of Black Sunday.
Story-filled Color Options
To complete the offering, each of the four color options embraces an element of taking hits from the bong - bud, glass, cherry ember, and quadruple smoke.
Final Result Makes You Feel High, So High
The final result is a comprehensive limited edition sneaker offering that gives the wearer more than just a premium recognizable sneaker, but a story-filled shoe packed with historical, current and futuristic cannabis vibes, all of which influenced by Cypress Hill’s Black Sunday album.
To sum it all up, these shoes will make you feel high, so high.
